Adding water to food can help too, but most cats will be encouraged to drink from a moving water fountain. Therefore it is the first to fail, often enough. She had other problems, but the kitneys were the big one. She made it to about 13 until her kidneys shut down. My last cat, Dorkie Dork, a Maine Coon-mix runt, had malformed kidneys which only appeared on ultrasound (when she was having her right, rear leg amputated due to trauma).
